A HAMMER-wielding robber attacked a disabled man and his wife.

The woman, 52, was helping her wheelchair bound husband, 68, from their car into their home on Amble’s Gloster Park estate when the attacker struck at 10.12pm on Monday.

The man approached the couple and demanded money from them.

He then entered the house and assaulted the woman with what police believe to be a hammer.

The man stole a mobile phone, a cordless phone and a small amount of cash. The woman suffered facial injuries and bruising to her arms and body.

Her husband was knocked from his wheelchair during the attack, but escaped injury. The robber fled towards Amble cemetery, behind the couple’s home.
